Soldier’s Institute

The Chatham Soldier’s Institute was built in 1861 at the corner of Chatham Barracks. The front wall of this grand building remains today at the junction of Brompton Hill and Dock Road. The Soldier’s Institute provided a place of relaxation for the troops, with reading rooms, games rooms, a refreshment room, a lecture theatre and a 4,000 volume library. Although built to serve the military, it was run (and paid for) by civilians.
