NOT in Brompton

The following pubs sometimes appear on lists of Brompton Pubs, but were actually not in Brompton

Black Lion

Fox Lane (Mill Road)

This pub is listed in the 1849 Williams Directory as being in Brompton instead of New Brompton.

Harrow Manor

River Street

Probably confused with The Harrow in Manor Street

Hill House Tavern

Dock Road/Payhouse Lane

Large House bought by the Navy to use as a payhouse and lodging-house for Dockyard visitors. Later used to billet Army officers too. Became Hill House Tavern in 1761. Pulled down c.1778

Marquis of Granby

Chatham Barracks

This was the licensed canteen within Chatham (Kitchener) Barracks

New Hill House Tavern/Army & Navy (2)

Brompton Road (Dock Road)

Not to be confused with the Army & Navy in River Street, this was in fact in Chatham, a few yards north of Chatham Parish Church, though it was often said to be in Brompton. Pulled down in 1860 when RM Barracks were extended.

Queen’s Head (2)

Brompton Road (Dock Road)

Not to be confused with the Queen’s head in the High Street, this was in fact in Chatham, a few yards north of Chatham Parish Church, though it was often said to be in Brompton. Pulled down in 1862 when RM Barracks were extended.

Red Lion

High Street

A newspaper article of 1902 refers to the Red Lion in Brompton Highstreet. Another source says it became the Conservative Club Oct 1925. Almost certainly Golden Lion with name mis-reported (the Conservative club met in the Golden Lion before getting their own club).

Red Lion (2)

Brompton Road (Dock Road)

Was actually at the end of Red Cat Lane (possibly the origin of the Lane’s name) between the RM Barracks and Chatham Curch. Pulled down in 1862 when RM Barracks were extended. Often said to be in Brompton.

White House

Navy Row

Extension of old High Street Gillingham (not New Brompton), Navy Row ran from Knight Avenue to the Docks, now Pier Road. Opposite the bottom of Corporation Street. Sometimes reported to be in Brompton.
